One busy night Luke got a call on the radio. âFour-one-one, return to the station and see the desk sergeant.â
âFour-one-one, ten-four.â
Luke came in and met the desk sergeant. He asked Luke, âDo you know how to use this?â He reached under the counter to show Luke a Thompson submachine gun and two extra magazines.
âYeah, the Marine Corps still had some in their inventory, we trained with them. They fire from an open-bolt position, forty-five caliber, and climb when fired.â
âGood. Take this and go to Third and Stateâthe firemen reported someone with long guns coming out of a fourth-floor apartment. Theyâre afraid of getting shot at while fighting the trash fire in the alley behind the bank building. Go on down there and protect the firemen, and be careful with that thing,â he said, pointing at the submachine gun.
Luke drove to the scene. He was thinking that the city was really serious about fighting crime to have a weapon like this. He got out of the patrol car and walked to the fire truck and reported to the assistant chief.
âWhere did you see the people with long guns?
âUp in that apartment building next to the bank. They were coming down the fire escape. Havenât seen them lately but you never know.â
âOkay, got you covered.â
Luke walked over to a dark part of the alley, stood behind a telephone pole, and positioned himself where he could still see everything. His heart was thumping in his chest with the thought that he might actually have to use that weapon. He breathed deeply.
The firefighters put out the fire and began rolling up their hoses. As they were boarding their trucks, the assistant chief came up to thank Luke for covering their backs.
âNo sweat, all in a nightâs work,â Luke told the chief.
He took the Thompson back to the desk sergeant.
âI knew you were in the Marine Corps and could handle that weapon.â the sergeant said.
Luke smiled and went out to his patrol car. He drove around waiting for the bump he got from adrenaline to go away.
âFour-one-one, a call came in reporting a purse snatching in the parking lot of the hospital. The detectives are there now talking to the victim.â
âFour-one-one, ten-four, got a description of the suspect?â
âFour-one-one, the suspect is described as a black male, about five foot nine. One hundred eighty pounds, black hair, brown eyes.â
âFour-one-one, got a clothing description?â
âFour-one-one, ten-four, the suspect has been described as being naked.â
âFour-one-one, naked? As in barefooted all over?â
âFour-one-one, ten-four, that is correct, no clothingâ
âFour-one-one, ten-four.â
Luke drove to the hospital; the parking lot surrounded the five-story building. He drove slowly through the rows of cars but didnât see anything suspicious. He parked his car, took out his flashlight, and began searching the alleys leading away from the hospital. As he was walking through the third alley he noticed a brown foot sticking out from behind a dumpster. He drew his pistol and got closer. He saw a black male lying behind the garbage container. He turned the corner and saw the man was using a purse to cover his genitals.
